Arch Cape House

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and a forested hillside in Arch Cape, Oregon, this cedar-shingled retreat was designed by architect Mark Engberg, founder of Colab Architecture + Urban Design, as a weekend escape that soon became home. Located 85 feet above sea level—safely outside the tsunami zone—the house is oriented around a central courtyard that shelters from coastal winds and draws in natural light. A cantilevered roof shades the living room’s floor-to-ceiling glass, while a double-sided fireplace connects the interior to the courtyard and anchors the home structurally.
Inside, slate and red oak floors define spaces designed for both quiet moments and gatherings. A loft with raised beds welcomes visiting nieces, while a main-floor bedroom makes aging in place easy. Whether the Engbergs are entertaining or enjoying the company of their rescue dog, Vandy, the home offers a calm, connected sense of place.
